Shop Shakeology | Your Daily Dose of Dense Nutrition
Shakeology: Protein shakes and meal replacement shakes are among the most popular weight loss supplements on the market. Dieters use these shakes to reduce calorie intake, improve performance and curb hunger in attempts to reach wellness and fitness goals.
Though there are many different types of protein and meal replacement shakes available, Shakeology — a cross between a meal replacement shake and a protein shake — has become a hit with consumers.

Shakeology is the nutritional beverage program affiliated with the expansive BeachBody fitness and lifestyle empire. According to the company, the beverages provide a “daily dose of dense nutrition” to help consumers reach weight loss, fitness or health goals. Shakeology shakes are available through Beachbody coach distributors or online.
What Is Shakeology?
Shakeology drinks are often used as weight loss shakes and many consumers use them as meal replacements to reduce calories. The company says that the drinks can also be used to curb cravings, as a healthy snack, or along with a balanced meal to boost fitness and improve wellness.
Consumers choose from a variety of flavors including Vanilla, Chocolate, Cafe Latte, Strawberry and Greenberry. Shakeology vegan flavors, including Vanilla, Cafe Latte, and Tropical Strawberry are also available. Recipes are provided to help consumers make different drinks with basic flavors. The company recommends that you drink at least one Shakeology shake each day.
According to Beachbody, each beverage provides protein (from whey or plant sources), probiotics, prebiotics, digestive enzymes, antioxidants, phytonutrients and adaptogens (herbs). Because the beverage contains so many nutritional elements, the company refers to the drinks as “dense nutrition.”
The following nutrition information is provided for one serving (42g) of Shakeology chocolate mix
- Calories: 160
- Fat: 2g
- Sodium: 150mg
- Carbohydrates: 17g
- Fiber: 6g
- Sugars: 6g
- Protein: 17g
So are Shakeology shakes good for you? The company says that each shake provides a beneficial mix of superfood ingredients. The website has claimed that “incredible whole food ingredients from around the world, uncooked and unprocessed, provide a wealth of superfood nutrition all in one shake.”
Since many weight loss doctors and nutrition experts promote the benefits of eating whole foods for improved health and wellness, these statements sound appealing to anyone trying to improve their level of fitness or lose weight.
But keep in mind that when you are drinking a Shakeology shake you are not actually consuming whole foods. You are consuming a product that, in fact, has been cooked and processed into powder form. The company acknowledges that its statements about the benefits of its products have not been evaluated for accuracy by the FDA.
So does that mean that Shakeology products don’t provide any nutritional benefit? No, absolutely not. According to the label, a chocolate shake is a good source of dietary fiber and protein which can help you to curb cravings. The shakes are also high in vitamins and nutrients including vitamins A, B6, B12, C and E. The shake is also high in magnesium, niacin, iron and a good source of zinc.
If you replace one meal each day with a Shakeology shake, you may lose weight as a result. Each shake provides about 160 calories. A typical meal can range from 400-700 calories and may not provide key nutrients that make weight loss easier (such as fiber and protein). So if you reduce your calorie intake by 250 to 550 calories and still benefit from the hunger-busting benefits of fiber and protein, you are likely to slim down.
However, the company recommends adding ingredients to the shakes to fill out your meal. If you add high-calorie ingredients like nuts, seeds, dairy products, or avocado, you can easily end up with a shake that is higher in calories than a well-planned, well-rounded meal.
However, your weight loss may be short-lived if you become dependent on the shakes. If you eventually stop buying and using the shakes, you may gain the weight back when you return to your old eating routine. For that reason, it’s important to learn how to adjust your eating habits while you use Shakeology if you want the pounds to stay off for good.
Shakeology is a nutrition shake that was developed by a team of wellness enthusiasts in 2009, including Darin Olien, the CEO, and co-founder of Beachbody.
Beachbody is a company that sells workouts videos, supplements and nutrition programs.
Beachbody uses multi-level marketing to sell its products (including Shakeology), with over 340,000 “coaches” peddling and promoting the products mainly via social media.
Shakeology is at the heart of the Beachbody weight loss program and Beachbody members are encouraged to drink it daily.
Shakeology is promoted as a “superfood nutrition shake” that is claimed to help dieters lose weight, reduce junk food cravings, boost energy levels and support healthy digestion.
Replacing a meal with a shake with fewer calories will likely result in weight loss for most people.
However, the same goes for replacing a meal with a smaller meal or a meal that contains fewer calories. The key to weight loss is creating a calorie deficit, whether that be by consuming fewer calories or by expending more energy through increased activity.
When Shakeology is prepared with water, it contains about 160 calories, which is around the same amount of calories found in two eggs.
For a meal, this is not enough calories for most people. For this reason, replacing breakfast, lunch or dinner with a Shakeology shake will likely result in weight loss as long as the dieter doesn’t overeat on other foods throughout the day.
Many studies have shown that low-calorie meal replacements (including shakes) can be effective for short-term weight loss.
However, some studies show that using overall calorie reduction techniques is more effective in keeping weight off in the long run, compared to relying on meal replacement programs.
For example, a study in 132 overweight people found that short-term weight loss was similar between groups who were given meal replacement shakes (Slimfast) or taught calorie reduction techniques using regular food.
However, the group taught to reduce calories using regular food experienced significantly less weight regain than the meal replacement group over a 36-month follow-up.
This shows that although using a meal replacement shake may promote quick weight loss, creating a healthy food reduction plan using whole foods is more effective in keeping weight off for good.
Shakeology Nutrition Facts
Finding the time to prepare healthy meals can be challenging for some people, especially those leading busy lifestyles.
Although the majority of the calories you consume should come from whole foods, occasionally relying on a supplement like Shakeology for a quick snack or meal is harmless.
Shakeology could be particularly useful for those with limited time in the morning who are tempted to grab an unhealthy meal on the run.
For example, making a shake with a scoop of Shakeology, frozen berries, almond butter, and coconut milk is a much better choice than stopping for breakfast at a fast-food restaurant.
It’s fair to say that Shakeology is healthier than some other protein shakes and meal replacement beverages available on the market.
Many products are loaded with added sugar, artificial colors, unhealthy oils and preservatives. Although Shakeology does contain added sugar, it’s a lower amount than some other shake products.
For example, a serving of vanilla-flavored Shakeology contains 7 grams of sugar, while a serving (11 oz or 325 ml) of Slimfast original vanilla shake has 18 grams of sugar.
